Indicator vs Study in Technical Analysis

In technical analysis, the terms indicator and study are often used interchangeably but there is a key difference.

An indicator is a mathematical calculation based on price, volume, volatility, or other market data that helps traders analyze market conditions.

Examples of indicators include:

  • Relative Strength Index (RSI)
  • Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD)
  • Bollinger Bands
  • Average True Range (ATR)
  • Stochastic Oscillator

Indicators are designed to provide information about trends, momentum, volatility, or market strength.

A study is a general charting tool that may include indicators, overlays, drawings, or other forms of analysis

Studies can include:

  • Technical indicators
  • Moving averages
  • Trendlines
  • Pivot points
  • Volume analysis tools
  • Custom chart overlays

All indicators can be considered studies.

 Not all studies are indicators.
